Diversity Day is Coming!
Again this year, Olson Middle School will be celebrating the diversity of our students and staff with the annual Diversity Day Celebration.  Students/staff who are interested in hosting a booth with information about your culture, hobby, history, etc. should complete the application before Weds, May 2nd.  Diversity Day will be hosted in the Media Center this year on May 25th.

Pennies for Patients Fundraiser
Each year Olson Middle School supports Pennies for Patients, a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in their efforts to fund research to find cures and new medicines for cnacer patients and to assist children who have leukemia or lymphoma.  This year, as part of that fundraiser, we are supporting "Cap on Cancer" day, Friday, March 16th.  Students may purchase a ticket for $1+ that will allow them to wear a hat during the day (displayed with the ticket).  So find a cool hat and purchase a ticket to wear your hat all day Friday!

The after school program where students build their own dog house is starting again!  April 1st in B119 from last bell to 4:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Lasts 6-8 weeks.  Come join us!

Operation Adventure (OA) Lists
are posted for this summer!  Find them outside the Guidance Office, by the lunch lines, and outside Mr Gilbert's room, A206.  Look for your names and see Mr Gilbert for questions

Cougar Council Members
There will be a make-up meeting on Thursday, March 8th in C204, Mrs Kibort's room after school.  We will also meet next week on Thursday, March 15th instead of Monday.

NHD Regional Results
Congratulations to the OMS family members who competited at Regionals last night.  Gabby Denniston in Performance, Shayaan Gandhi in Websites and Amelia Lodwich in Exhibit Boards all won Honorable Mentions.  Ciara Kinney in Performance and Abby Ziehl in Websites are moving on to the State Competition at the U of M in April!  Awesome job all of you!

JHS Competition & Sideline Cheer Tryouts
If think you might be interested in JHS Cheer come try it out at the open gyms on Sat, March 10, 17 & 24 and April 7th & 14th in the Jefferson gymnastics gym.  Parent meeting  on Monday, Apr 16th in the JHS Cafeteria.  For tryout information and more click here

Science Olympiad Members Go to State!
Science Olympiad is on their way to the State Tournament on Saturday March 10 at St. Olaf University! At the Regional Tournament in January we came home with these medals:

8th Graders Interested in Our Environment & the Future
Join "The Future Club" and help design ways for OMS to contriubute to an environmentally available future.  Meet during lunch in A103 on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Questions? Contact Maya HIdalgo or Sabrina Osman

8th Grade Peer Tutors Needed
If you are an 8th grader with good grades and a desire to help others we need you!  We are looking for Peer Tutors to work one to one with students needing a little extra to succeed.  Help others, make a new friend, be part of the solution!  Pick up an application in the guidance office beginning Jan 31st

Girls' Winter Volleyball Team
Is still accepting new players! If you are interested in playing Winter Volleyball here at OMS, with no charge to join!, see Mr Anderson in A201.  Join the team, you'll have a blast! Did we mention it's free?!

March Pageturners!
Pageturners is our book of the month club and meets once a week during student lunches.  No need to sign up, just show up.  Here are our February book picks!
-6th Grade meets in Mr. Swanson's room on Tuesdays and will be reading Holes by Louis Sacher.
-7th Grade meets in Mrs. Gillis' room on Mondays and will be reading Inkheart by Cornelia Funke.
 -8th Grade meets in the Media Center on Thursdays and will be reading from a variety of new books.
Culture Club..
..is a great way to learn more about yourself, your culture, and others around you!  We'll discuss our stories, traditions, and family history, then share it with others to increase empathy and understanding at OMS.  You'll also be able to share your ideas with OMS teachers in the future. This is open to ALL students.  Monday's from 2:45 - 3:45 in the lunchroom.  Meet with Ms Oni and Mr Teddy. (You will need a ride home at 3:45 or you'll be sent to Galaxy until your ride arrives.)

Coding Club!
Do you want to make your own games, apps, websites, and animations?  Join Coding Club on Mondays for the rest of the year.  All ability levels are welcome!  We'll help you find something you're passionate about creating and help find the resources you need to make it happen.  No signup necessary.  If you have any questions, ask Mr. Beck!

Open Makerspace Time Is Back!
Makerspace is now open every Thursday from 2:45-3:45 in our new space! Do you want to build Lego robots, program Spheros, design for the 3D printer, or play with electricity?  Then come to the OMS Makerspace!  No need to sign up, just show up.

Do you know of something happening here at OMS in a club, activity or classroom that should be shared?  Is someone at OMS doing something outstanding, like a fabulous volunteer? or an activity that needs recognition?  We'd love to create a feature based on your idea, just let us know and we'll see what we can do.  Just fill out the Feature Idea Form (http://preview.tinyurl.com/show-feature) electronically or stop by the Media Center, fill out the form and drop it in the green feature suggestion box.
